When Spirit Calls answer
Let me Introduce myself..This is me.. This is Spirit
Hello, I’m Gemma
I never planned to end up here.
Not as a writer. Not as someone speaking publicly about spirit. And certainly not as what I now half-jokingly call an “accidental gal medium.”
For most of my life, I was a therapist. I worked in mental health for over 25 years, sitting with people through trauma, grief, identity loss, breakdowns, and rebuilding. My work was grounded in psychology, evidence, and the very human need to make sense of pain.
I believed in patterns. In meaning-making. In healing.
But I also believed there were limits to what we could explain.
Then my own story stopped fitting neatly into anything I had learned.
I’m an adoptee. For years, that fact lived quietly in the background of my life. Not absent—but not fully understood either. Like a closed door I could sense but didn’t yet know how to open.
Then came COVID.
Like many people, I found myself in a strange pause. Life slowed down. The noise softened. And the questions I had managed to outrun for decades finally caught up with me.
So I did something simple.
I took a DNA test.
I expected curiosity. Maybe a few unexpected relatives. A bit of family history. Something interesting, but contained.
Instead, my life expanded in every direction at once.
A hidden family across continents. An Irish father I never knew. An aunt known in our family story as The Adoption Whisperer. Connections I had no map for and no emotional preparation to receive.
And then something even stranger began to happen.
Signs.
Moments that felt too precise to dismiss.
Synchronicities that arrived at exactly the right time, too often to be coincidence.
A sense—quiet at first, then impossible to ignore—that connection doesn’t end where we think it does.
As a therapist, I was trained to look for evidence. To ask questions. To stay grounded in what could be observed, tested, and understood.
So I did exactly that.
I tried to explain it away.
I tried to rationalise it.
I tried to keep it all in the “interesting but probably coincidental” box.
But life has a way of insisting when you’re not listening closely enough.
Over time, something shifted.
Not in a dramatic moment, but in a gradual unfolding. A softening. A noticing. A willingness to stay present with experiences I once would have dismissed.
What I came to understand is that intuition isn’t the opposite of psychology. It’s part of being human. And sometimes, when life cracks us open, we begin to experience reality in a wider way.
That opening became the beginning of my work as a medium.
Not because I set out to become one.
But because I couldn’t ignore what was happening anymore.
This space—this Substack—is where I’ll be sharing that journey.
Part memoir. Part reflection. Part exploration of what it means to be human when logic and intuition begin to overlap.
I’ll write about adoption and identity. About signs and synchronicity. About ancestral connection. About the “tower moments” that dismantle who we think we are so something more honest can emerge.
And I’ll also share what I’m learning as I go—because I’m still very much in it.
Still asking questions.
Still listening.
Still figuring it out.
If you’re here, you might be navigating your own version of that space between what makes sense and what you feel.
You’re welcome here.
I don’t promise certainty.
But I do promise honesty.
And stories that might make you
pause and wonder if life is speaking more often than we realise.
Maybe it is.
I suppose that’s what I’m here to find out.

Great story
